PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — More than 100 people turned out Monday for a senior citizen’s expo hosted by City Councilman Curtis Jones at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia.
Morgan Cephas, Councilman Jones’s Director of Community Outreach, says it’s often tough for older people to find the help they need.
“We’re really trying to bring critical services to their doorstep,” says Cephas, “so they’re not being forced to travel down to Center City.”
Attendee Cynthia Johnson says Monday’s expo had a lot to offer.
“Well, for the health fair, for one thing,” says Johnson, “and it’s always good to have information on seniors, and what’s available for us, and to get the SEPTA picture for the upcoming transpasses.”
Vernoca Michael, Pennsylvania’s first female African-American boxing promoter, says senior expos offer a wealth of information.
“And every time they have one, I go. As you know, listening isn’t always one of our greatest strengths, so every time you come to one of these seminars, you are hearing more and more that you’re taking in, and the more you take in, the more you can give out.”
The expo offered presentations on winter preparedness, Medicare, and protective services, as well as health screenings, light refreshments, and giveaways from several exhibitors, including PECO.
